QCIF at QUT’s “BioeconOMICS” workshop

QCIF was represented at QUT’s “BioeconOMICS” workshop on Thursday, 30 November, with three speakers talking about work QCIF is involved in to support the bioeconomy sector.

Dr Jeff Christiansen, of RCC and QCIF, spoke about omics.data.edu.au, a platform consisting of cloud-based data services and tools for Australian researchers so they can combine genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic and metabolomic data, and then analyse and interpret these data.

QFAB Director Dr Dominique Gorse informed workshop attendees of the bioinformatics resources available to help Queensland researchers, including those at QUT, get the most out of their data. To address researchers’ data literacy skills gaps, QCIF offers Software and Data Carpentries and Hacky Hours, and QFAB has specialised workshops, the QFAB Analysis Hotel and consulting services

Dr Igor Makunin of RCC presented the Genomics Virtual Lab at the workshop, including services maintained by RCC’s GVL-Qld team, such as Galaxy-qld, GVL RStudio server, RDS Life Sciences (Genomics) Project Beacon Tutorial server, and a complete mirror of datasets from the 1000 Genomes project.

The GVL-Qld team maintains the Galaxy-qld server in QRIScloud and provides training, often in collaboration with other organisations, such as QFAB.

The QUT workshop’s aim was to showcase the university’s capabilities in ‘omics-related research in the bioeconomy sector, and to hear from experts in the field.

The ‘omics suffix is commonly used in the biological sciences to describe endeavours undertaken to characterise and quantify an area of study to its most complete state. Genomics is perhaps the most well-known of these to date, but other ‘omics disciplines include proteomics, metabolomics and environomics.
