UQ’s Professor Joe Shapter and Griffith’s Professor Andrew Smith have joined QCIF’s board of directors.
Prof. Shapter replaces Prof. Robyn Ward and Prof. Smith replaces Linda O’Brien on the board as their respective university representatives.
Prof. Smith, who holds a PhD in biochemistry from Southampton University, joined Griffith in November 2016 as Pro Vice Chancellor (Science) after having served as RMIT’s Dean of Applied Sciences since 2010. He is also currently on the executive of the Australian Council of Deans of Science.
Prof. Smith’s international research career has involved appointments in England, Denmark and the U.S., and he has worked extensively with industry, including multinationals Unilever and Johnson & Johnson.
Prof. Shapter, who holds a PhD in reaction dynamics from the University of Toronto, joined UQ earlier this year as Pro Vice Chancellor (Research Infrastructure).
He previously served as Flinders University’s Dean of the School of Chemical and Physical Sciences for more than six years, and headed Flinders involvement in both the Australian National Fabrication Facility (ANFF) and the Australian Microscopy andMicroanalysis Research Facility (AMMRF), where he served as the South Australia director.
He first joined Flinders in 1996 after leaving the University of Western Ontario.
QCIF welcomes Prof. Shapter and Prof. Smith to the board, and thanks Prof. Ward and Ms O’Brien for their contribution to QCIF.
QCIF CEO Dr Phil Gurney said: “It’s great to see the experience, and variety of backgrounds and network of contacts that QCIF’s board brings to the organisation. These help QCIF to direct our focus to the needs of our members, and the research community in general.”
Ms O’Brien had been QCIF’s longest-serving board member, and also headed up the board’s Services and Infrastructure sub-committee. She stepped down after taking on additional responsibilities following her promotion at Griffith to Pro Vice Chancellor and Head of the Logan Campus.
Prof. Ward left UQ as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) to take up a position at the University of Sydney as Executive Dean of a large, new Faculty of Medicine and Health.
QCIF wishes Prof. Ward and Ms O’Brien all the best in their new roles.
